Engineering Week’s Virtual Field Trips

February 18-24 is Engineers Week. Something you might think was dreamed up to help address the pressing talent shortage in industry, but has actually been around since 1951. Discovery Education and its partners are offering students and educators nationwide a number of digital learning opportunities in support of Engineers Week. 

One of the coolest of these is the virtual field trip to the Edge at Hudson Yards. The Edge is the highest outdoor skydeck in the Western hemisphere, providing an unparalleled 360° view of New York City and a behind-the-scenes look at amazing innovations of architecture and engineering. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience where students can control their journey and interact with their environment as they explore learning hotspots, visit a weather observation station, and take flight with a drone through the New York City skyline. 

Equally cool is the Sustainable Futures Virtual Field Trip provided by Trane Technologies. Certainly sustainability is a hot topic these days. This virtual field trip, while it doesn’t invoke vertigo the way the Edge trip does, is an exciting way to give students an up-close look at the countless ways sustainable innovation is embraced everyday through individual actions, green career pathways, and historic global initiatives. According to program details, “This immersive virtual journey empowers students to pair big goals with bold action as they get involved in creating the future they want to see, starting in their own communities. Along the way, students will gain new perspectives from experts at Trane Technologies, a youth sustainability advocate, and more!”

Goodness, when I was in school the only field trip we got to take was to the zoo. Not that there aren’t interesting things at the zoo. Not quite as sustainably exciting as feeling like I was at the top of the tallest building on the continent.

Point of view (POV) is what the character or narrator telling the story can see (his or her perspective). The author chooses “who” is to tell the story by determining the point of view. Depending on who the narrator is, he/she will be standing at one point and seeing the action. This viewpoint will give the narrator a partial or whole view of events as they happen. Many stories have the protagonist telling the story, while in others, the narrator may be another character or an outside viewer, a narrator who is not in the story at all. The narrator should not be confused with the author, who is the writer of the story and whose opinions may not be those written into the narrative.
