Biometric Technology: Benefits and Concerns

Biometrics is the statistical measurement of a person’s unique physical and behavioral characteristics, mainly used for identification and access control. It is fast becoming a preferred alternative to passwords and pins. Apple uses biometrics for Face ID and claims that the chances of mistaken identity are less than one to one million

Despite its usefulness to accurately identify people, there is, however, a hidden danger to biometrics. As Eduardo Azanza, CEO and co-founder of Veridas, observes, “Biometric technology works around a unique identity that remains unchanged, unlike codes and encryption keys that can be reset. Therefore, compromised biometric data used to access private information and steal someone’s identity is far more endangering than a phished password. The increased use of CCTV to track individuals using facial recognition has also heightened concerns about surveillance and security, particularly on the government level.”

So, how can organizations implement a technology proven so effective at identity authentication without compromising personal privacy? Writing in a recent Industry Today feature, Azanza says that any third-party verification technology must uphold government standards, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as well as employ the latest fraud detection and prevention methods. This includes using anti-spoofing technology and multi-function authentication. He also recommends multiple layers of biometrics that combine voice and facial printing.

“Biometric technology will continue to advance and become widespread due to its convenience and agility,” Azanza says. “Hence, businesses must be able to reliably protect data, identify deep fakes, and comply with regulations.”
