Who Are the Next Top Young Scientists?

There’s a lot of talk these days about how industry can attract and retain talent; a longer range concern is how to develop talent in upcoming generations. One answer is the annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

As we cover this week at Industry Today, the 2022 edition of this science challenge is now open to entries from middle school students in grades 5-8. Entries take the form of one or two minute video presentations of a proposed solution to an everyday community problem. Submissions are evaluated for creative, scientific knowledge, and effective communication. Competition entries are accepted at YoungScientistLab.com up until April 26, 2022.

The grand prize winner earns the title of “America’s Top Scientist” that comes with a  $25,000 award and a mentorship with a 3M scientist. Ten finalists also participate in a summer 3M internship, an  Improving Lives Award winner, and up to 50 state and Washington D.C. merit winners who have demonstrated a passion for solving everyday problems to improve the world around them.

The 2021 winner, 14-year-old Sarah Park from Jacksonville, Fla., created Spark Care+, a personalized music therapy treatment for mental health improvement using artificial intelligence (AI), skin response (GSR) and photoplethysmography (PPG).

Further details are reported in Search for America’s Top Young Scientist of 2022 Begins.
